I have only just a minute,
Just sixty seconds in it;
Forced upon me—can’t refuse it,
Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it;
I will suffer if I lose it,
Give account if I abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute,
But eternity is in it.
In the not-so-distant past (like two months ago) I read poems like this and felt guilty for not packing every minute with productivity as the “accomplish-monster” in me would rear its needy head. But on April Fool’s Day, I tested positive for the virus that created a global pandemic. And on Mother’s Day, I fell and fractured the bone behind my knee cap. (FYI, I am locking myself in my room on July 4th!)
All of my down time is giving me a valuable perspective. I am realizing how beneficial it is to spend quiet time letting my soul idle while I rest my hyper-self and soak up the presence of God. It’s life-giving and “eternity is in it.”
