Storm of the Century!

All it takes is a big dump of snow to remind us of just how fragile we really are. We prepared by purchasing a generator after the last power outage, but our water isn’t working yet because the pump was too cold to start! Since we had the generator, I figured we would have water so I didn’t fill the bathtub. That left me melting snow all day on the propane stove so we could flush the toilets. Weather events like this tend to keep us on our toes anticipating each new setback.

We’ve been through weather events in the past, and I used to get anxious and catastrophize about each setback. But I’ve finally learned to let go and let God—mainly because I grew sick of beating my head against the wall. My worry didn’t change the weather. It just made me miss out on the beauty that came with the chaos. The snow on the mountains is breathtaking. The cozy nights with candlelight are treasured memories. Figuring out what to cook out of the ever-thawing food from the freezer is an entertaining accomplishment rather than a frustrating feat. Life is a lot better when I look for the good rather than fret over what isn’t. But only works when I surrender and let Christ do it in me.

In Philippians, the Apostle Paul proclaims that he can do all things through Christ. I have heard that verse quoted to support everything from finding the strength to dig a ditch or the courage to share the gospel. I believe Christ will give us what we need to do both of those, but if we look at this verse in context, Paul is speaking specifically about contentment. 

Philippians 4: 11-13, reads, “…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Then on the heels of that in the next verse, Paul states, “I can do all things through him (Christ) who gives me strength.”

I am relying on the Lord to give me the strength to be content. And it’s working.
